Our families

Two cultures, one celebration

Mohammed’s family comes from Riyadh, in the heart of Najd. Sana’s family is Kurdish, from the mountains of northern Iraq.

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Najd

  • Al-Sadu weaving

Bedouin women weave Al-Sadu on ground looms from camel, goat and sheep hair. Its red, black and ivory bands run along the edges of this page.

  • Gahwa and dates

Arabic coffee, lightly roasted with cardamom, poured into small finjan cups and served with dates. It is the first gesture of welcome in a Najdi home.

  • Al-Ardah

The Najdi sword dance: two rows of men moving to drums and sung poetry, performed at weddings and national celebrations.

The mountains of northern Iraq

Kurdistan

  • Kilim

Flat-woven rugs in madder red, indigo and green, worked in diamonds and hooked motifs that families pass down.

  • Halparke and govend

The circle dance at every Kurdish wedding. Everyone links little fingers and follows the leader’s handkerchief, and the circle keeps growing.

  • Kurdish bridal dress

Layered, richly coloured gowns with a wide belt, finished with gold coins worn across the forehead and at the neck.
